2008-OneBoard-BuildOff-part5

My FW 2008 One Board Furniture Build-off Part5

The legs of my table were sitting patiently on my workbench for a long time waiting for final dimensioning. I wanted them to look simple and be strong, and in the end i made them using blind mortises and couldn't be happier.

The tenons were cut on my table saw, nibbled away and then hand filed to final dimensions. It was at this stage that my 40" Pub Table became a 42" pub table!! I decided that the legs could always be cut down, but never added on too, so i decided to leave them at their current length.

The bottom stretchers are at a perfect height for a foot rest no matter if your standing or sitting on a high top chair, something that was very important to me for a Pub Table. The 42" tall top is also perfect height to eat at or drink at also if your standing or sitting. In the end i was very happy with the 42" height, we will see how my wife likes it...

The top is affixed to the base using homemade wooden dowel pegs and glue, and the leg stretchers were sized to cover up the blemishes on the underside of the table. I had some issue figuring out a way to clamp the top to the legs during glue curing, and i solved this by cutting six pocket holes in the legs and using pocket screws to hold the top to the bottom, don't worry, the screws were removed after the glue dried! No metal parts were used in my final table!

The last picture is my design, including all the cut lines used on my one board, the only part that changed was the size of the breadboard tenons, other than that the entire table came out exactly as planned!

In the final installment i will have the final table stained, and show it in use! I have to remove a few doors off their hinges to get it up the basement stairs and into the kitchen!!
