2008-OneBoard-BuildOff-part6

My FW 2008 One Board Furniture Build-off Part6

i had hoped to make this an exciting post but the sad fact is that i am not a finalist in this years contest.

i was up against some stiff competition, a few other real fine tables, some great chairs, and lots of other stuff including a working grandfather clock (which isn't quite furniture). I was shocked to see metal parts in lots of the entry's as i remember the rules stating "Metal parts are confined to hardware only." which i now suppose is a vague assortment of things. none of which you need worry about if you use no metal parts.

this was my table completed for entry at 11:55pm May 31st, honestly the finish was still wet. again i tried something new without extensive testing and it didn't turn out as i had planned (like with the hide glue). i had made some very nice mixtures with three stain colors, and the samples looked great, but the table did not. in the last hour the finish finally started to look good, the two-tone pub table i envisioned was finally completed!

i was very excited to finish my table and initially i thought my entry photos were fine, but they really are terrible. they should have been at least taken outside on the lawn, even if i would have moved the garbage can 5' it would have been better! unfortunately i believe this really hurt my entry.

while not a finalist in the contest, i am still proud and excited about my pub table entry. there were a lot of firsts for me on this project, like making my own biscuits and dowels! using a breadboard end to create a dead flat table from a cupped board is something i will always be proud of. its amazing how flat i was able to make the top!

i did get mentioned in the Fine woodworking blog GlueTube on June 6th, and that was really cool! I really accomplished what i set out to do, build a great piece of furniture that i will use, and get noticed! I got more visits to my website this month than ever before and i want to thank all of you for your interest in my work!
