Refinishing & Tune-Up of this old Jack Plane

I recently met up with a woodworking budy who sold me a few older power tools which needed some work, but still great tools. to sweeten the deal he threw in this 14" plane that had a price of $5.00 written with black marker, i got it for FREE!

When i got it home it was truly a beauty, and i immediately began to disassemble and sand the handle and front knobs. I didn't get a picture of the remaining finish on the old handle, but if you look closely at the bottom you can see the old red shellac used for coat these beautiful handles.

I sanded the handles up over a few nights and began the process of re-sealing these handles, the results look amazing!

I cleaned as much as I could, and it still looked like I hadn't done anything, so i decided to have this plane honed to remove all the oil, dirt, rust in one shot.

When the part comes back from honing ($20 later) it looks as new as the day it was forged!

I bought a Hock 2" blade from my new favorite supplier (hartvilletool.com) and gave it a very light coat of black paint and a little vegitable oil to keep it clean.

I definately have some questions about this plane, like why the frog has only two contact points, and who made it.

More details on this beauty as they develop.
